Abstract

Background : Sleep disturbance will adversely affect all physiological activities of the human body. Medical students is a group with the most risk of experiencing sleep disorders. This is due to the duration and intensity of high education and heavy tasks and responsibilities. Ja'i dance which is categorized as dance movement therapy is one of the choices of non-pharmacological therapy to overcome the problem of student sleep quality. Ja'i's dance has simple movements involving large muscles.
Objective : To determine the effect of ja'i dance on the sleep quality of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Nusa Cendana.
Method : This research is a quasy experimental study with a pre and post test with control group research design conducted on preclinical students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Nusa Cendana. The sampling technique used stratified random sampling of 48 people divided into 2 groups: the treatment group and the control group. Ja'i dance was given 3 times a week for 3 weeks to the treatment group. Sleep quality was measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire during the pretest and posttest. Data analysis used Wilcoxon test to see changes in sleep quality of each group and the man whitney test to determine the effect of ja'i dance on sleep quality.
Results : Most of the samples in the treatment group experienced improved sleep quality after participating in the Ja'i Dance by 16 students (66.7%) while the control group had poor sleep quality by 22 students (91.7%). Analysis of the effect of ja'i dance on the sleep quality of the treatment group and control group students respectively showed p = 0,000 and p = 0.722. Analysis of the effect of ja'i dance on the sleep quality of students showed a value of p = 0,000 (p <0.05)
Conclusions : Ja'i's dance has a significant influence on the sleep quality of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Nusa Cendana.
